NADME Certification

Why Become Certified

Certification by NADME is the highest professional credential for doctors and nurses who perform the physical exams required by the federal Department of Transportation for the 6 million plus commercial truck and motorcoach drivers. The advantages of becoming certified include:

  • Increased credibility with motor carriers, insurance companies, the public, and your peers
  • Greater visibility and recognition as an expert in DOT-required exams
  • Enhanced knowledge and understanding of the DOT requirements and driver health issues
  • Increases the opportunities for your practice
  • Immediate public recognition on NADME's national registry of certified medical examiners, which connects you with truck and motorcoach companies, drivers and insurance companies
  • Provides CME credits to help meet your annual continuing education requirements
  • Demonstrates your personal commitment to professionalism and safe and ethical practices
  • Contribute to public and driver safety on the highways

"The tragic Mother's Day accident in 2000 is, unfortunately, a good example of what can happen when a driver is not physically qualified. That accident demonstrates clearly how important it is for medical examiners to know and understand the federal driver physical qualification requirements before they conduct driver physicals, and the need to comply with them when a driver's physical examination is conducted." Robert Crescenzo, Vice President of Safety & Loss Control, Lancer Insurance.

How to Become Certified

NADME Training - STEP 1
The NADME Driver Medical Examination Training Course provides the essential information medical examiners need to know and understand to perform exams in compliance with the federal regulations that govern driver physical exams. The training course also prepares you to take and successfully complete the certification examination.
Medical Examination, Certification and CME's - STEP 2
Candidates who complete the training course, pass the certification examination will receive NADME certification and also earn 6 CME's from Mt. Sinai School of Medicine.

How to maintain Your Certification

NADME Review of Medical Examinations
Every certified medical examiner will be required to submit for a copy of the completed DOT driver medical examination long form to NADME for at least two (2) medical examinations they complete after being certified by NADME. The purpose for this is provide a follow-up review of each certified examiner to help ensure that the knowledge he or she demonstrated on the certification examination has been put into practice, for the public's protection. To ensure a driver's privacy, the review of examination form will be conducted exclusively by a medical professional who is a member of NADME's Medical Board.
Supplemental Training
DOT's requirements or guidance governing driver physical qualifications can change from time to time. Whenever this occurs, examiners may be required to take supplemental training to ensure knowledge and understanding of DOT's changes.
Recurrent Training and Periodic Recertification
Recurrent Training and Recertification will be required every two years to ensure the requisite regulatory knowledge and proficiency is maintained.
Certification Suspension and Revocation
There can be serious consequences to a driver, to the company he or she works for, and to the public if a medical examiner negligently or otherwise inappropriately certifies a commercial truck or bus driver as physically qualified to operate a commercial motor vehicle. To address this, a medical examiner's certification will be suspended or revoked under the following circumstances:
  1. In the event a medical examiner's state medical license is suspended or revoked, his/her NADME certification will also be suspended or revoked and name removed from NADME's registry of certified medical examiners until such time as the examiner's state license is reinstated and he/she retakes the NADME Driver Medical Examination Training Course and passes the certification examination.
  2. A medical examiner's certification from NADME will be suspended or revoked for serious, uncorrected noncompliance with the applicable driver physical qualification requirements. The determination of this will be conducted under a fair and objective procedure NADME has established for this purpose.
Grading and Progress Policy
Candidates for NADME certification and CME credits must score 80% or higher on the certification examination to be certified and receive 6 CME credits from Mt. Siani Medical School.

Candidates will be permitted to take the certification examination twice. A candidate who does not pass the certification examination on the second attempt will be required re-register and pay a new registration fee. The fees paid for NADME training and certification examination will not be refunded.
