Doctors of medicine, osteopathy, chiropractic, physician's assistant, advanced practice nurse who are licensed, certified or registered in accordance with your applicable state laws and regulations to perform physical examinations.

I understand that there will be required certification for those who perform DOT driver physical exams.
This is true. Required DOT medical examiner certification and training for examiners will be published in final rule by the federal motor carrier administration (FMCSA) by March 2012.

I am a licensed chiropractor in my state and would like to receive certification that will allow me to perform DOT physical exams.
As a chiropractor you are already allowed to perform these exams if you meet the requirements listed above. Most examiners however wish to receive instruction in the requirements of the DOT medical examination since there are unique elements specific to the DOT driver medical examination.

What is the purpose of NADME’s training?
NADME’s DOT medical examiner training course was developed by a team of medical professionals and other individuals with years of practical, first-hand experience conducting DOT medical examinations/ physicals that the federal Department of Transportation (DOT) requires commercial motor vehicle drivers to take.  The training is focused specifically on the DOT's regulatory requirements that govern the physical standards that a driver must meet to be qualified to drive a commercial motor vehicle (i.e., truck or bus) and the regulatory requirements that DOT medical examiners must know and comply with when conducting DOT medical examinations.

Who is the governing body for DOT physicals?

The only body with governing authority over driver physicals is the DOT federal motor carrier safety administration through the NRCME.  DOT sets the medical criteria that drivers must meet in order to demonstrate they are physically qualified to operate a commercial motor vehicle.  NADME's role is to provide training on the DOT's driver physical qualification requirements and conducting a DOT medical examination that is designed to test an examiner's knowledge and understanding of the DOT's requirements.

Where can I go for more information regarding the DOT medical examination and certification requirements?
You can always go to the DOT website at http://nrcme.fmcsa.dot.gov to view regulations or download the physical exam forms, handbooks as well as contact the FMCSA Medical Expert Panel.
